PORTRAIT OF A GRAMMAR STUDENT
APA Grammar School aims to develop young men and women, rooted in Jesus, in embracing wonder, independence, and diligence as they discover God’s world.
Learning Foundations
As a Classical and Christian school, we are committed to the idea that all knowledge is unified. Everything is indeed connected, because God created all of it for His glory! That said, it is helpful to think about our academics in their specific subject areas. Below, by subject, you will find a brief description of the content and skills addressed in the Grammar years.

Bible
Our students will regularly approach the Bible prayerfully, devotionally, and academically. Scripture memorization happens in four large passages each year. Broad theological concepts are addressed through a weekly catechism. Grammar students also attend chapel each month along with the rest of the school. ELA
The English language is explored and mastered by a variety of means in these important years. Reading comprehension is strengthened through poetry memorization and as class novels are enjoyed and analyzed. Weekly work will include grammar and handwriting practice, as well as increasingly longer written compositions. History
The Grammar School content is aligned with the kindergarten class and Logic School in a 4-year rotation of the different historical eras. Students will experience history through read-alouds, discussions, classroom art projects. Math
There is a tremendous range of mathematical skills being worked on within these years. That said, in each grade level, our students continually develop number sense, computational fluency,problem-solving skills, and a growing awareness of the importance of math in everyday life. Their work in these years will set the foundation for success in Algebra, Geometry, and beyond. Science
God’s world is explored by our students in a multifaceted approach involving read-alouds, lapbooking, hands-on demonstrations, and great at-home/classroom discussions. To support home-days, the curriculum is aligned with all grade levels and Logic School. |
Parent's Role
In the Grammar School years, parents play a large role in facilitating their child’s learning in the home. In these grade levels, home-days should last about 2.5-4 hours, but the process is flexible to fit into each family’s rhythms. In the older grades, students become increasingly independent on homedays. Our prayer is that as the years progress, you will find a wonderful “flow” to each home-day and establish a rich family culture because of your time together as a family.
