UNiform policy
Our uniform policy is driven by our desire to create an environment of learning where dress is a tool to build a sense of family, camaraderie and intention towards the task at hand. We desire to honor God and be unified in all we do. APA seeks to encourage modesty and focus on the educational process. However, we also believe the school uniform should be comfortable, practical, and allow for self expression. Our uniform is one of the ways we seek to establish a culture of high standards, excellence, and honor.
We believe that parents are the primary enforcers of the dress code. DRESS NEATLY: Clothing should be clean, unwrinkled and in good repair. There should not be stains, holes, or tears in clothes. Clothing should be appropriately sized. BE MODEST: Students should seek to be modest. Students should wear skirts and shorts that are no shorter than just above the knee. Students must wear shorts, tights, or leggings under dresses or skirts. Please wear blouses and shirts that fit properly and are comfortably loose to allow for varying activities. BE MINDFUL OF THE WEATHER: Unless weather conditions are inclement, students will play outside during recess and other breaks and outside activities, and as such they should always be prepared for the cold and wet conditions common to the Pacific Northwest. Rain boots, jackets, hats, and gloves should be sent to school with students every day in the colder months. In warmer months hats, sunscreen, and sunglasses are suggested to protect students from the sun. Shoes should be robust enough for outdoor play – dress shoes will typically not allow students the freedom they need to run, play, and engage in all the physical activities that APA school promotes. STUDENTS SHOULD BE COMFORTABLE: Clothes should be comfortable at all times so that they can focus on learning and play. Clothes that fit poorly or do not allow a child to comfortably sit, stand, walk, run, play, and jump (including shoes) for any length of time may be detrimental to the student’s classroom experience. APA will communicate days when it is permissible to wear an Arrow Prep T-Shirt/ Sweatshirt in place of their uniform. Uniform Pieces: *Styles may vary in terms of neckline, fabric, etc. to suit your child's specific needs. However, cable knit sweaters and cargo shorts/pants will not be permitted. Jackets: All uniform pieces worn in doors must be compliant with the following guidelines. Students are welcome to bring a jacket to wear for outdoor play that is non compliant with the uniform. If they anticipate being cold indoors they can wear a cardigan/sweater as outlined in the guidelines below. Cardigan/ Sweater: Solid navy blue cardigan. Can be a pull over, button or zip up. Please make sure there is no brand logo visible and that there is enough space to put our monogram on it. School sweatshirts do not count as a sweater and may only be worn on school t-shirt/sweatshirt days. Polo top: Navy, light blue, white, or gray. May not have any brand logo visible. Must have enough room for a monogram. Shirts must cover chest and stomach. No pockets. Pants/ Trousers/ Shorts: Navy or gray only. No leggings, jeans, corduroy, cutoffs, cargo pants or designs. Shorts should have a minimum 7 in. inseam. Skirts/Dresses/Pinafores: Must be either solid navy blue or gray. Dresses must be worn with a collar shirt or turtleneck underneath or have a collar on them. Please make sure there are no zippers or other details on the dress where the monogram will be placed. No pockets where monogram detail would be. Dresses/Skirts should fall approximately where a 7 in. short inseam would or longer Tights/Leggings: Solid gray, black, navy or white only. On days when your daughter will not be wearing tights/leggings with her dress/skirt, please dress her in modesty shorts (navy, black, gray, white, cream or light pink) so she can participate comfortably in all play and learning activities. Socks: May have simple patterns and designs. Students will need at least one pair of solid dress socks either navy, gray white or black for Dress Days. Shoes: Should be white, black, brown, gray, silver, navy or tan, camel or gold. Shoes must have sides. No open toe shoes, sandals, or high heels above 1 in. are allowed. On rainy days it is recommended for students to bring a pair of rain-boots to school. Please make a strong effort to make sure shoes are as solid a color as possible. We do recognize that sometimes it is hard to find that and if there is a shoe that has a logo or some small part of the shoe with a different color we will be understanding of that. As long as parents do not take advantage of this policy we will keep it this way. Children must have a good pair of running/tennis shoes for recess. If they do not match the dress code those shoes are only allowed to be worn during recess or electives (if necessary). Hair: students are welcome to wear their hair in any style that they wish as long as it complies with our general guidelines of neatness, modesty, and cleanliness. Jewelry/Accessories: Students are welcome to wear jewelry or accessories to school. If the jewelry or accessories at any point become a distraction/toy in the classroom the teachers have the discretion to have students place items away until the end of the school day. Dress uniform: navy monogrammed sweater, polo shirt or navy dress, gray trousers, navy, black, gray or white socks and gray, tan, navy, black or brown shoes. This is a specific combination of uniform items you should already have. School T-Shirt/ Sweatshirt Days On School T-Shirt/ Sweatshirt days students are permitted to wear their school t-shirts and sweatshirts with any kind of bottoms they like, as long as they comply with our general guidelines of neatness, modesty, cleanliness, and inseam length and allow for activity during recess/ class times. Free Dress and Spirit Days On Free Dress and Spirit Days all clothing worn must comply with our general policies regarding neatness, modesty, and cleanliness. Ripped or stained clothing is not allowed. Clothing still must cover students' chests, stomachs, and shorts/dresses/skirts need to have a 7 in. inseam. No clothing will inappropriate, violent, or offensive images or words will be allowed. * Electives may have their own uniform requirements (shoes, smocks, fitness clothing, etc.), which will be released with elective information We will be putting logos on the polo shirts and sweaters in bulk, details for this will be communicated when available. The school will provide options for sweatshirts and t-shirts to be purchased. All items of clothing worn to school must be clearly labeled with the child’s name. If there is a hole or large stain on any uniform piece that item will need to be retired and a new replacement item purchased. Students should come to school with clean uniforms every day.
